Introduction: DIY NECKLACE CLASP
I like to make my own clasp to put on the necklaces I make. It give a nice rustic look, way nicer than the purchased ones. And even better, I made them with recycled copper.
Step 1: MATERIAL
You need:
-18 gauge copper wire (I use old electrical wire, and skin it out of the plastic);
-2 long nose pliers;
-round nose plier;
-file;
-hammer;
-wire cutter;
-anvil or other hard metal surface (I use a bigger hammer).
Step 2: CUT
Cut a piece of copper wire long about 5 cm.
Step 3: FILE
File one of the edge of the wire.
Step 4: SHAPING THE HOOK
Bend the edge with the long nose pliers, of about 2 mm, on a 30° angle.
Step 5: SHAPING
With the round nose pliers, make a almost full circle with the wire, forming a small hook.
Step 6: SHAPING
With the flat pliers make a 90° bent on the bottom of the circle.
Form a loop with the round nose pliers.
Round the left wire around the bottom of the hook (see photo).
Step 7: FINISHING THE HOOK
Cut away the excessive wire.
File the edge.
With the flat pliers squeeze down the edge of the wire.
Step 8: HAMMER
This is how the hook should look when you are done.
Give a little hammer on the edge of the hook, and on both opposite side of the round part of the hook. This will give a nice look, and will make the hook really sturdy.
Step 9: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CLASP
Cut another section of wire of about 5 mm.
Bent it at 90° with the flat pliers.
Step 10: THE FIRST HOOP
Make an hoop with the round pliers.
Wrap around the left over wire with the flat pliers.
Step 11: THE SECOND HOOP
Bent at 90° the other side of the wire.
Make another loop with the round nose pliers.
Wrap around the left over wire.
Step 12: FINISHING
Cut away the left over wire.
File the edge down.
Squeeze the edge down.
Step 13: HAMMER
Hammer a little the edges of the two loops.
Step 14: DONE
