Introduction: Harry Potter Book Necklace

About: I am married with two children. Spring, summer, and fall are my very favorite times of the year. I enjoy working in the yard, sewing, cooking, quilting, gardening, and creating. I do this to keep my sanity.
With school starting I thought I would make an Instructable that would encourage kids to read by making a Harry Potter necklace. You could make any type of book by following these instructions. Follow through and I will show you how easy it is.

Step 1: Some Suggestions

I am not great at using certain computer programs so I could not do everything that would have made these necklace pendants over the top:
I would have used a Harry Potter font for the "quote" page print outs.
# 6 or 7 font.
Printed favorite sections from the book because the font would be smaller.
Added art work for some of the pages.
Add some tiny charms.

Step 2: Supplies

1 Harry Potter book print out.
1 Harry Potter book pages print out. I used popular quotes from the book.
1 String or chain to wear.
1 Floppy disk plastic tab.
1 Paper clip.
1 Card stock paper scrap. About the thickness of a business card.
Clear packaging tape
2 Sided tape.
Writing pen or marker.
Paper for printing.
Cardboard for work area.
Glue.

Step 3: Tools

Computer
Printer
Camera
Scissors
Ruler
Glue G. or craft glue.

Step 4: Print

  1. Remove the black tab from the floppy disk.
  2. Take a picture from a page that has thumbnails of Harry Potter books.
  3. Print the book / books you want to make.  You may need to re-size it to fit the black tab.
  4. Print the book pages you want to put in the book. I cut and pasted online quotes into word pad and printed them out. http://quotations.about.com/od/harrypotterquotations/a/harrypotter1.htm
  5. Cut out the book ( print out ) larger than the outline of the book.
  6. Stick a piece of the 2 sided tape to the center of the backside of the book.
  7. Stick this to a counter-top so it will stay in place while you tape the face of it..
  8. Place a piece of the clear packaging tape over the face of the book.
  9. Cut out the book the size of the black tabs.
  10. From the card stock paper cut one piece slightly larger than the black tab.
  11. Stick a piece of the 2 sided tape to the center back of the cutout to hold it in place while you tape the face of it.
  12. Stick a piece of the clear packaging tape over the cut out.
  13. Cut the page to fit the black tab.

Step 5: Glue Paper Clip

This next few parts of gluing are a little tricky. You need to make sure you don't glue the center of the pages of the black tab together or the book won't open.
  1. Glue the card stockcut out piece to the back of the black tab carefully. Make sure the pages are not glued together.
  2. While this is drying . . . .
  3. Draw a small circle on the card stock paper that will be used to cover the paper clip.
  4. Stick the clear packaging tape over the top of the circle.
  5. Cut it out.
  6. Glue the paper clip to the corner (of the back of the black tab making sure you glue it to the correct corner so the book will open in the correct direction.)
  7. Glue the circle over the paper clip.
  8. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 6: Glue Book

Glue the Harry Potter book to the front of the black tab carefully.
Allow to dry.
Meanwhile it is time to mark and cut out the book pages.

Step 7: Mark and Cut

  1. Mark the pages of the book using the black tab as a guide.
  2. Cut out the strips as shown.
  3. Fan fold the pages slightly smaller than the book.
  4. Carefully glue the end of the strip to the inside front page.
  5. Allow to completely dry then
  6. Refold the pages so they fit inside the book.

Step 8: Cut String

I used a chain to attach the pendant to but a string may be used.
String the chain or string through the loop of the paper clip.
That is all there is to making a book necklace.

Step 9: Sunshiine's Final Thoughts

I had a lot of fun making these books. They look good and are good quality for being made out of paper. I hope this has inspired you to make one for yourself or someone else.
In closing I would like to thank our instructables company, sponsors, authors, readers, and members; for making this community a great success! Many hours and hard work has been put into making this place the best DIY on the Internet. Have fun and thanks for stopping by!
