This is an entry for the weekly challenge. Because origami is so beautiful I wanted to make an origami craft that would be practical and useful. I made a refrigerator magnet for this tutorial. I am definitely making more origami pieces into useful items. I am adding a few more in the next day or two. I have enjoyed the Instructables website so much the past year or so. I appreciate all the interns at Instructables for all their hard work in making this a place to share, have fun and connect with other members! I would love to make refrigerator magnets that looked like all the Instructable's interns as a reminder of all your hard work! I picked this one because it was easy enough for me because I can't draw. I had to improvise. Thank you all!

Step 1: Supplies and Patterns

Supplies:

2 Pieces of 8 1/2 X 8 1/2 fabric ( You can use these instead : 1 napkin, hankie or paper.)
Interfacing 8 1/2 X 8 1/2 if sewing a napkin.
Needle and matching thread for fabric only.
Pins

Sewing machine optional
Ironing board and iron optional if using paper or a bought napkin or hankie.

Step 2: Measurements for the Dress

I used a cloth napkin that I made for the dress. You can make this with cloth napkins, paper, or single layered fabric. I wanted a little more dimension so I made a lined napkin.

Cut 2 (8 1/2) inches Square pieces of fabric.
Cut 2 (8 1/2) inches interfacing.
Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.
Sew with right sides together leave a 4 inch opening for turning.
Turn, clip corners, and using a sharp point poke out the corners making a nice point.
Press well turning down the hem where the opening is.
Stitch opening closed.
Press well.

Basically you are making a lined cloth napkin with interfacing ironed on the wrong side of both pieces of fabric and sewn together.

Step 3: Interfacing and Sewing the Napkin

Iron the interfacing and sew the napkin:

Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.
Sew with right sides together leave a 4 inch opening for turning.
Turn, clip corners, and using a sharp point poke out the corners making a nice point.
Press well turning down the hem where the opening is.
Stitch opening closed.
Press well.

Step 4: Print and Cut Out the Pieces

Print and cut out all the pattern pieces:

For this magnet I used the face picture of Scoochmaroo's profile.
The legs from the paper doll Lucille Ball.
The instructable's robot sticker.
The Instructables.com label.

Step 5: Fold the Dress

Follow the pictures or watch the video on how to fold the dress.

I used an iron to crease the fabric.

Step 6: Apron, Bodice Insert, and Pocket

To make the apron I used the dress waist as a guide to go by.
I made an insert for the dress because I am not an artist and do not know how to draw a body or arms.
Look at the pictures to see how I made the insert using the dress bodice as a guide.
I made 2 pocket pieces and ironed interfacing between them.

Step 7: Embellishments

Sew the buttons on the bodice and apron.
Glue the Popsicle to the face.
Glue the bodice to the face, neck and Popsicle.
Glue Instructable's stickers to the apron.
Glue the pocket to the apron.
Glue the doll face to the dress.
Glue the legs to the dress.
Tie the apron to the dress.
Glue the apron to the dress turning down the waist line for a finished look.
Glue the apron sides toward the back of the dress.
Glue the magnet to the back of the dress as shown.

Step 8: Sunshiine's Final Thoughts!

This refrigerator magnet was a lot of fun to create. I can imagine a lot of different ways you could make a useful item from origami. I have not had a lot of experience folding origami but will be incorporating it into my crafts. It is fun, easy and decorative.
