Make a simple, elegant floating wall shelf using laminated pine that you will find at your local department store.

This simple wall shelf looks like it is floating on the wall, but it's secured using keyhole brackets at the back of the shelves. It's pretty easy to make and the only tools you need are a drill/driver (or screwdriver), and a jigsaw.

3 of 1200 x 300 mm and 3 of 800 x 200 mm laminated pine for the shelves

Step 1: Marking the Saw Route

Cut or have cut to length the laminated pine shelves. The measures will be 3 of 800 x 200 and 3 of1200 x 300 mm. Mark the sawing route as seen on the diagrams above.

Step 2: Cut the Slots

Use a jigsaw to cut out the slots as shown in the diagrams above, and also a 40 mm long rebate for mounting the keyhole hangers at the back of [2] uprights.

GOOD TO KNOW: For perfect straight lines use a steel ruler to draw out the cut lines.

Step 3: Sanding and Checking

Before assembly, take the time to sand all the boards and cut edges nice and smooth.

Step 4:

If you are painting the horizontal boards as we did for our shelf, do this now.

Step 5: Assembling the Screws

Assemble the screws for the corroborating the shelf to the wall using a drill.

Step 6: Assembling the Shelf

Slot the uprights into the shelves. If necessary, tap gently with a rubber mallet to lock the pieces together.
