Introduction: Apple Crumb Pie

About: Hello and Welcome to In the Kitchen With Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. My goal for the show is to teach you how to cook really good food at home for cheap. Eating out everyday can get expensive, but it doe…

In this instructable I will show you how to make an Apple Crumb Pie. This apple pie recipe is very easy to make. Apple Crumble pies are one of my favorite! This is pretty much like a Dutch Apple pie. You can switch out the apples with whatever kind of apples you like. You can serve it warm with some vanilla ice cream, or serve it cold, you can drizzle some caramel on top if you like, however you would like to eat it. Pies are great and not hard to make, if I can do it, you can do it. Let's get baking! :)

If you have any questions or comments leave them down below and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Follow the easy steps below or watch the video tutorial or do both. :)

Step 1: Ingredients/Tools

You may print the recipe here if you want.

Ingredients:

Pie Filling:

  • 6 to 8 Granny Smith apples (any tart apple really) peeled and sliced thin
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour (plain) (32g)
  • 1/3 cup of white granulated sugar (65g)
  • 1 tsp. of ground cinnamon (4g)
  • 1/2 tsp. of nutmeg (2g)
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice (15ml)
  • (2g) pinch of lemon zest (optional)

Crumb Topping:

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour (plain) (128g)
  • 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar (100g)
  • 1/2 cup of white granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1 1/2 tsp. of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup of softened butter (115g)

Tools:

  • 9-inch pie pan
  • bowls
  • fork
  • aluminum foil
  • sheet pan

Step 2: Create the Filling

First let's preheat the oven to 450 F (232 C). Next add the filling ingredients into a bowl, flour, white granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon zest. Then with a fork or a whisk, mix them all together.

Step 3: Slice, Pour, Mix

Now let's peel, core, and slice up some apples. 6 to 8 apples usually does the trick, I was able to get one very full 9 inch pie and one not so full 9 inch pie with 8 apples. For one pie 6 medium apples is sufficient. You can use whatever kind of apples you like, I like to use granny smith. After peeling, coring and slicing the apples (about 1/4 inch thick) place the apple slices in a large bowl. Add the lemon juice and then the pie filling mixture. Stir or shake the bowl until the apples get well coated.

Step 4: Make That Crumble

Now let's make our crumble. Add the crumble ingredients, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and mix together with a whisk or fork. Then add the softened butter. Using a fork or pastry blender mix all the ingredients together until it resembles large crumbs. The crumble is ready. :)

Step 5: Apples and Crumble Oh Yeah

Next we take a 9-inch pie pan and add our crust. I have a pre-made one that I got from the store. I already have an instructable on how to make an awesome homemade pie crust, which you can find here: https://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-Apple-Pie-With-Flaky-Crust/. Then place the apples flat side down circling the pan and going in. Then repeat and layer them up until really full. It should be mounded on top. The reason why I don't just dump them all in, is because the apples create too many pockets that way. Once mounded add the apple crumble on top, using a spoon or fork. Place the pie on a sheet pan, just case it bubbles over the edge a bit, this will keep the bottom of the oven clean. Bake the pie in the oven for 15 minutes at 450 F (232 C) Then cover the top with aluminum foil and bake it for another 45 to 55 minutes at 350 F (176 C).

Step 6: Cool and Serve

Once the pie comes out of the oven let it cool down before serving. The slices will stay together better after the pie has cooled completely. But you can certainly serve it warm! Enjoy! :)
