Introduction: Build a Mesmerizing Sand Table : a DIY Arduino Masterpiece!

This is a coffee table that draws in the sand using a single Arduino Uno. It's quite fascinating to watch. The first video is an overview, the second video is the instructions for the build.

Supplies

Step 1: Coffee Table

Get yourself a wooden coffee table and take off the top. Put a 3mm thick backboard attached to the legs of the table to hold the sand on.

Step 2: Make the Rails

  • Create another baseboard that will go under the 3mm board this will hold our rails and magnets.I used two rails MGN12H Slider rails, 600mm and 550mm

Step 3: Laser Cut the Parts

Download the cad file and cut the parts from 3mm wood panels, these parts will be used to connect the rails and pulleys together.

Step 4: Assemble the Cut Parts

Use the parts to screw the wood joints to connect the two rails and 5mm dowels to hold the gears. Put the N52 magnets on the main slider rail and connect the timing belt in a H configuration.

Step 5: Connect the Electronics

Connect the CNC Arduino shield board to the Arduino Uno. Connect the motors, sensor and limit switch as shown in the diagram.

Step 6: Upload the Code

Upload the Uno code called sandTable.ino you can also add your designs using sandify.org and use the converter.py code to run in Python to extract the x and y coordinates from the G-code
