Introduction: Cinnamon Twists

About: Hello and Welcome to In the Kitchen With Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. My goal for the show is to teach you how to cook really good food at home for cheap. Eating out everyday can get expensive, but it doe…

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make cinnamon twists. This puff pastry cinnamon twist recipe is so easy to make using just 4 ingredients. All you need is your puff pastry, sugar, cinnamon, and butter! Use homemade puff pastry or storebought frozen puff pastry for these cinnamon twists, it is totally up to you. Drizzle them with melted chocolate and some powdered sugar too if you like. If I can do it, you can do it. Let's get baking!

Follow the easy steps below or watch the video tutorial or do both! :)

Step 1: Ingredients and Tools

You may print the recipe here if you like.

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (homemade or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1 to 2 tsp. of ground cinnamon (3 to 6g)
  • 2 tbsp. butter (28g)

*NOTE: You won't use all of the cinnamon and sugar mix, probably only about a third of it. Save the rest for later, or just decrease the amount of cinnamon and sugar you use, to begin with.

Tools:

  • Sheet pan or cookie sheet
  • Silicone mat or parchment paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Ruler
  • Pizza cutter or knife
  • Shaker for cinnamon and sugar or a spoon
  • Basting brush

Step 2: Cinnamon and Sugar Mix

Preheat the oven to 400 F/205 C. Then, in a small bowl whisk together the cinnamon and sugar. I usually do two tsp. of cinnamon per 1/2 cup of sugar but you can certainly do more or less if you want. I like to put it in an empty spice container, so I always have a cinnamon and sugar mix ready to go on hand.

Step 3: Prep the Puff Pastry

40 minutes before you want to make these remove the puff pastry from the box and allow it to thaw until it becomes pliable. Note you can certainly use a homemade puff pastry if you like. I don't mind using a storebought one, because it takes so much less time, although homemade always tastes better. Once thawed out roll it out on a counter or table a little bit, not too much. Then use a ruler and cut straight pieces roughly one inch wide.

Step 4: Basting Butter Beautifully

Next, melt the butter in a small microwave-safe bowl or in a pot on the stovetop. Use a basting brush and baste the strips of puff pastry with butter. Come in with the cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle it on liberally. Then flip each side over and repeat with the butter and cinnamon and sugar.

*An alternative method would be to add the cinnamon and sugar mix to a sheet pan and then after basting the strips, place them in the pan with the cinnamon and sugar, instead of using a shaker or spoon to sprinkle it on.

Step 5: Twist and Shout

Next, grab a strip and twist the ends a few times and place it on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Keep them about an inch to one and a half inches apart.

Step 6: Bake Them!

Now bake them in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they are nice and golden brown and puffy. Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for 5 minutes before serving them. One thing you can do is drizzle them with chocolate and then sprinkle on some powdered sugar as well. Or have a strawberry dipping sauce to dip them in, etc. Enjoy!
