Introduction: Ground Beef Tacos

About: Hello and Welcome to In the Kitchen With Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. My goal for the show is to teach you how to cook really good food at home for cheap. Eating out everyday can get expensive, but it doe…

In this instructable I will show you how to make tacos more specifically ground beef tacos. This recipe for ground beef taco meat is really easy to make. In order to make a great taco you need to start with some yummy meat. I really like ground beef tacos, but you can switch out the beef with grilled chicken, pork, shrimp, fish, etc. Although the seasonings are for ground beef. In the video I also show off my awesome ceramic taco platter that I got from Kenley. Alright it is taco time, let's get started!

Follow the easy steps below or watch the video tutorial or do both. :)

Step 1: Ingredients/Tools

You can print the recipe here.

Ingredients for Taco Meat:

  • 1 pound of ground beef (I am using 80% lean) (450g)
  • 2 tsp. of chili powder (10g)
  • 1/2 tsp. of garlic powder (3g)
  • 1/2 tsp. of onion powder (3g)
  • 1/4 tsp. of oregano (1g)
  • 1 tsp. of ground cumin (5g)
  • 1 tsp. of salt (5g)
  • 1/4 tsp. of ground black pepper (1g)
  • 1/2 cup of tomato sauce (110g)
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil for the skillet (15g)

Taco Ingredients:

  • Taco shells, corn tortillas, or flour tortillas
  • Taco meat
  • diced tomatoes
  • lettuce
  • grated cheese (I like to use cheddar)
  • sour cream
  • avocados or guacamole

Tools:

  • bowl
  • whisk
  • spatula
  • skillet

Step 2: Spices

First place a skillet on your stovetop and add about 1 Tbsp. of olive oil to it, set the stovetop to medium heat (350F 176C). You can actually leave it out because the meat has fat in it, but I always like to add it for a bit of flavor. Now let's combine all of our spices in a bowl and whisk them together. I recommend trying the recipe out as is first and then you can adjust according to your tastes the next time. :) Next let's bring our ground beef, spices, and tomato sauce over to the stove.

Step 3: Brown That Meat

Now let's add our ground beef to the hot skillet and using a spatula break up the meat and stir occasionally as it cooks until all brown. It won't take too long to cook the meat.

Step 4: Drain and Season

Next let's drain the meat. I usually just tilt the skillet at about a 45 degree angle and let the fats drain to the bottom, then use a spoon and take most of it out. I like to leave about 1 Tbsp. left, to help keep the meat moist. Now add all of your seasonings and the tomato sauce. :)

Step 5: Finish the Meat

Next to finish the meat off, stir in the spices and tomato sauce really well, and then turn the heat to medium low and let the meat cook for about 3 or 4 more minutes. Then the ground beef taco meat will be ready to go.

Step 6: Taco Plate and Presentation

Now we need to cut up all of our toppings for our tacos. You can use individual bowls for each topping or use a cool taco platter. I have this cool ceramic taco platter that I like. Some toppings I really like using are diced tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and of course homemade guacamole. For the shells, I am using corn tortillas, but also like the corn hard shells, or flour tortillas.
