About: Hello and Welcome to In the Kitchen With Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. My goal for the show is to teach you how to cook really good food at home for cheap. Eating out everyday can get expensive, but it doe…

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make a Star Wars Stormtrooper cake. You can make this cake for your next Star Wars party, Halloween, Birthday, etc. This stormtrooper cake is fairly easy to make, a bit tedious, but the steps are easy to follow. If you haven't worked with fondant before, this is a great beginner cake to make using only two colors of fondant, black and white. If you love Star Wars and Stormtroopers make this cake! If I can do it, you can do it. Let's get baking!

Step 2: Bake Cake and Print Stencil

Begin by baking your cake. You can use any kind of cake that you want. Storebought cake mix, or a from-scratch recipe.

I use my 12-inch round cake pan because it allows me to make the cake fairly large. But you can certainly use smaller cake pans if you like, or a rectangular pan as well.

NOTE:Make sure to use shortening/flour in the pan, and even a piece of parchment paper on the bottom to make sure the cake comes out easily without sticking.

Once the cake is done baking, allow it to cool completely.

While the cake is cooling you can find and print out the Stormtrooper face stencil. Do a search online and you will be able to find out. Then save the image and scale it up on a document like in Word or another similar program.

Now just print it out.

Step 3: Trim That Stencil and Cake

Use scissors and cut around the stencil so you just have the Stormtrooper face.

Remove the cake from the pan along with the parchment paper if you used that. Place it on a cutting board. Now set the stencil on top in the middle.

Use a knife and trim around the stencil.

TIP: You can save those cake trimmings and make cake pops or cakesicles with them or just snack on them.

Step 4: Frost That Cake

Time to frost the cake. You can use storebought frosting or homemade frosting.

Add a dollop of frosting to the middle of your cake board. Then set the cake on it. Now frost the entire cake. The frosting will act as glue and hold the fondant on the cake and give the cake flavor.

Step 5: Rolling the Fondant

Time to work with the white fondant. If you haven't worked with fondant before, don't worry, it is fairly easy to work with.

Take a large chunk of fondant and knead it with your hands. It has to be kneaded before you can roll it. Once it is nice and soft, roll out the fondant into a large oval or circle, the shape doesn't matter as long as it is much larger than the stencil.

Roll the fondant about 1/8th of an inch thick. It may stick to your table or counter, if so, roll it on parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Now, you can roll it back on itself which makes it easier to lay it on the cake.

Step 6: Shape and Trim

Roll the fondant over the stormtrooper head. Then use your clean fingers and hands and smooth and shape the fondant around the cake.

Once done, take a knife and trim the fondant around the bottom of the cake. If needed, use a paper towel and clean up the board near the base of the cake.

Step 7: Cut the Stencil

Time to cut out all of the pieces from the stencil that we want to use as mini-guides for the black fondant. So cut out the long band on the top, the eyes, the nose piece, the circles, and the mouthpiece.

No need to cut out the lines on the cheeks, you can easily freehand those.

Step 8: Trim, Brush, Stick

Now, take a chunk of black fondant and knead it. Then roll it out again about 1/8th inch thick. Place the small stencil pieces on it and cut those pieces out.

Use a little paintbrush and brush a little bit of water where you want to stick the black fondant. The water will act as glue. Then place all the pieces on the cake.

If needed put the face back on the cake so you can see where all the pieces are supposed to go.

Step 9: More Detail

If you want you can add more details. On the nose piece, there are little white pieces. You can cut those out of the white fondant and place them. Or just leave it all black.

Then take a small amount of black fondant and roll it out into a thin snake. Trim it into little pieces and then place those on the cheeks. Again, use water as needed, so they stick.

And there you go, and awesome Star Wars Stormtrooper cake. Enjoy!
