Introduction: Easy Macrame Christmas Tree Ornament

About: I'm a wedding photographer by day and crafter by night. I love learning new skills and sharing what I know with the world! You can often expect to receive a home made gift from me :)

Supplies: two lengths of chord (mine is 3mm thick) that are each 10ft long, eight pieces of the same rope that are 8 inches long, wool needle, and scissors.

Step 1: Step 1: Getting Set Up

Fold your two long pieces of rope so that approx. 1/3 of the rope is on one side, and 2/3 on the other. Tape the two pieces to a board with the shorter ends in the middle.

Step 2: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Take the left hand piece, and bring it over top of the other three (making a 4 shape)

Step 3: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Take the right most piece (not the one you just brought over) and bring it on top of the piece you just brought across

Step 4: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Take that same right hand piece and put it behind all the other pieces of rope

Step 5: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Now bring the tail of that piece in through the loop/hole on the left hand side. It should be coming from the back and so will come out the front

Step 6: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Pull the two side pieces to move the knot up to the tape

Step 7: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Now we are going to do the same in reverse! Bright the right hand piece over top of the other three (making a backwards 4 shape)

Step 8: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Take the left hand piece and put it in front of the piece you just brought over

Step 9: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Take that same piece and bring it across but behind the others

Step 10: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Bring the tail of that piece through the right hand loop (from back to front)

Step 11: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Pull the two side pieces tight so the knot moves up the middle rope to the top

Step 12: Step 2: Learn a Square Knot!

Temp take the tape off and pull the two middle pieces so there isn't two loops at the top any more

Step 13: Step 3: Repeat!

And there you have it! You made a square knot! Repeat this until you have used up all your two side pieces of rope (the middle two will stay the same length the same time)

Step 14: Step 3: Repeat

Keep going!

Step 15: Step 3: Repeat!

Should be looking something like this now!

Step 16: Step 4: Finish Up the Long Piece

Once you reach the end of your two side pieces, pull the knot tight and cut off all four lengths (no it won't come undone!)

Step 17: Step 5: Make the Tree Trunk

Take one of your scraps from the middle pieces you just cut, and loop it around 7 of your smaller pieces

Step 18: Step 5: Make the Tree Trunk

Take the eight smaller piece, wrap it around the other small pieces, and tie a knot

Step 19: Step 5: Make the Tree Trunk

Step 20: Step 5: Make the Tree Trunk

Flip over and tie another knot

Step 21: Step 5: Make the Tree Trunk

Cut those two tails off

Step 22: Step 6: Assemble the Tree!

Take your long length of square knots, and fold it back and forth to make a tree shape

Step 23: Step 6: Assemble the Tree!

Thread the long piece that the trunk is attached to onto your wool needle

Step 24: Step 6: Assemble the Tree!

Thread it through the layers of the tree all the way to the top

Step 25: FINISHED!

Once you reach the top, tie a knot, cut off the excess, and you are done!
